Project History: Ultra Naté. (Repost after I got all fancy with the yellow frames) Ultra Nate. Worked both Ultra’s “Grime, Silk & Thunder” and “Alchemy: G.S.T. Reloaded” for Peace Bisquit/Tommy Boy Entertainment. Cool, gorgeous, adventurous and a fierce DJ, P.S. Still serving. Her latest album, “Black Stereo Faith” was released in 2017, same year Billboard Magazine named her #12 Greatest Of All Time Top Dance Club Artist. Popular Publicity 2010 brought a new decade and with it a new name, Popular Publicity. With an eye toward a wider variety of projects and media, it felt right. While many–mostly longtime clients and friends–missed the cheeky punch of “Penetration, Inc.,” those who’d had more of a clutch-the-pearls reaction to the name, sighed in relief, put down the bottle, and happily stuck with Popular Publicity for their media needs.
(Spoiler: post contains a Grace Jones photo.) Project History (Actually, work history): As GM of the legendary (used legitimately, here) reopened NYC dance label West End Records (1999-2003) I also served as publicist and graphic designer. I did press for “West End founder and Paradise Garage financial backer Mel Cheren’s autobiography, “My life and The Paradise Garage: Keep on Dancin.” I’m also in the book. 🎧🎧🎧 I also designed the terrific “Masters At Work presents West End Records: The 25th Anniversary Edition Mastermix. 📸 The first image here is my proposed cover for the 30th anniversary comprehensive 5 CD set. The logo is cut off in the original photo, I reconstructed the entire logo in Photoshop for this The logo is cut off in the original photo, I reconstructed the entire logo in Photoshop for this image. I see it on Discogs. 🎧🎧🎧 I’d also put together the never-released “Masters At Work presents West End Records: The 25th Anniversary Edition Mastermix (Dubs, Alternate Mixes and DJ Tools). All about the MAW dubs! 📸 The second image is of Mel with Grace Jones and Tamiko Jones (“Can’t Live Without Your Love”) at the Paradise Garage, perhaps the first anniversary party. 😘 #discohistory #westendrecords #paradisegarage #melcheren #gracejones #tamikojones
Another Vandam DJ promo from when I was the opening DJ for Michael Magnan in the basement (with Desi Monster and Ladyfag) at this legendary party produced by Susanne Bartsch. Johnny Dynell was the upstairs main floor DJ. 😎 #publicist #lgbtpublicist #lgbtpr #lgbtpublicity #lgbtqpublicist #lgbt #lgbtq
A very rare selfie, thanks to my new glasses from Caddis. @caddis_life I wanted computer glasses that looked cool enough to wear to client meetings or dinner, and these D28s fit the bill. Got ‘em today and am going to order another pair, perhaps the Miklos, as readers. 😎 I also dig what Caddis is doing and how they are doing it. From their website. "Caddis is a mission disguised as readers. We’re done with acting our age. Let’s be our wildly experienced, highly intelligent, hyper-engaged, getting older selves. Put your readers on and join us. We’re squashing age stereotypes. Welcome to the new age.” I am so goddamn down with that! #mycaddis 😎 #publicist #lgbtpublicist #lgbtpr #lgbtpublicity #lgbtqpublicist #lgbt #lgbtq
The final post from the blog that accompanied my East Village Radio show that ran from February 20, 2005 - May 31, 2009. 🎧 “Penetration” was the one of the few shows hosted by a gay DJ and, I think, the only one that played disco unironically, along with unreleased new stuff, post-punk and what I liked to call “what-the-fuckers.” The show streamed live every Sunday night from a very cool, glass-fronted storefront studio on First Avenue, next to Lil’ Frankie's. EVR was founded by Lil’ Frankie’s owner, Frank Prisinzano. 🎧 Guests and guest DJs included DJ Will Automagic, Sean B, Nita Aviance, Gant Johnson, Aldo Hernandez, Billie Ray Martin, The Ones, Desi Santiago & Saint Buck, Shannon Michael Cane, W. Jeremy & Christy Love aka The House of Stank, Dirty Jean, Craig Roseberry, Noammon, Escandalo’s Viva Ruiz and Desi Santiago, and Billy Beyond. 🎧 After 4 years, though fun, it was becoming a job and it was about this time that EVR started getting big sponsors, like Top Shop and wanted to up the cool factor, even though the place was practically a New Yorker Magazine cartoon come to life. The station managers asked if I’d be cool moving my show to, like, 4:30 a.m. on a Tuesday or some shit (uh, no) and thus provided the perfect excuse to end the show. 🎧 The goodbye post featured the back cover of one of my favorite disco albums of all time, The Peter Jacques Band “Fire Night Dance,” which was produced by disco gods, Mauro Malavasi and Jaques Fred Petrus (who went on to produce Change with Luther Vandross), B.B. & Q. Band, and others. But “Fire Night Dance” and Macho’s cover of “I’m a Man” where their masterpieces, as far as I’m concerned. 🎧 You can find their 1979 video for “Walking On Music” on YouTube, complete with singers decked out in YSL’s gypsy look and vogueing dancers. 🎧 To see photos from the many EVR “Penetration” shows, tap the bio link and go to the About menu > DJ Andy Reynolds. 🎧 Photo of EVR by Bryan Derballa from the Wired Magazine post “Radio Is Soulless. Can These Radicals Make It Great Again?”, a story about EVR’s move to a new name (Dash Radio) and location (Brooklyn).
