Queer Indian-American Claps Back at Haters in Vibrant “UGLIES” Music Video
“I am reclaiming what I was made to feel–UGLY–for being too Indian or too queer!”
“I am reclaiming what I was made to feel–UGLY–for being too Indian or too queer!” says Vybhav (‘vibe-hav”) Jagannath, aka VJDAMUSICMAN, of his newest music video, “UGLIES.” “I am flipping that idea on its head. I’m not only calling out the haters as the true “uglies,” but want to show how beautiful and colorful Indian-American culture can be as seen through the queer lens.”
An up-tempo dance track, “UGLIES,” incorporates layers of Indian references, as well as traditional Indian kuthu dance steps and Indian rap, while pausing as his Indian-American friends humorously clock each other for “whitewashing” themselves, as they order chai (an Indian drink) at an American coffee shop.
“UGLIES” by VJDAMUSICMAN is out now. His third studio album, “Chaos on Canvas,” which tackles themes of queerness, ethnicity, and mental health struggles, was released on May 12, 2023.
Vybhav Jagannath is a first-generation Indian-American, born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, now living in the New York City area. He began making music as VJDAMUSICMAN in 2018 and has since released two albums “Escape the Retrograde” and “KINKS & TRAUMA.” He counts Nicki Minaj, Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Doja Cat as influences. • www.vjdamusicman.com Instagram @vjdamusicman YouTube
