(New York, NY) February 28, 2018–In a world increasingly threatened by small minds and big politics, The Black Party steamrolls into its 39th year. Legendary, welcoming, intimidating and exclusive, Rites XXXIX: The Black Party continues to pierce the boundaries of queer culture.

Underscoring the party’s forward momentum is the commissioning of New York City artist Gio Black Peter as this year’s Creative Director. A multimedia provocateur who’s built a formidable body of work resisting proscription and conformity, attendees can anticipate Gio’s eye-popping art, video, and performances to gleefully exploit this year’s theme, “PIGTOPIA: I Want to Break Free.”

Reliably subversive and immersive, the Black Party remains a world unto itself, a portal into a dizzying, dark, and decadent celebration of fetish, dance and art.

About the Theme: “PIGTOPIA: I Want to Break Free”

The place is here, the time is now.  Imagine if you will, an industrial farm where humanoid pig creatures are freakishly bred for their meat.  Creating a pig resistance movement, they muscle out their very own censor-free zone. In this new animal Eden–this “PIGTOPIA”– pleasure becomes a weapon and an act of defiance against forces threatening to take away their freedom. Through peepholes looking in, we glimpse scenes of a happy hedonistic queer Americana.

About the Creative Director: Gio Black Peter

This year’s Black Party featured artist and creative director is multi-media artist, performer and actor Gio Black Peter. Raised in New York City since the age of 5, Peter has become a quintessential New York artist and icon of the downtown scene.  Peter’s work explores nocturnal dreamlands and lucidity of the everyday, with themes including queer identity, the policing of boundaries, race, sexuality and immigration.
